Worth getting out of bed for.

Nature lovers and adrenalin junkies, rejoice – Matarangi is a great spot for every kind of adventure. Beach babies can take boogie boards and a picnic to the untouched white-sand beach a couple of minutes walk from the lodge. If you’d like to tackle a tuna or catch a kingfish, the local fishing grounds are a sport-fishing paradise. Book in with Epic Adventures for a day at sea in these famous fishing waters.

Surfing in the area is epic and the kitesurfing is superb from either just to the right of the boat ramp on a westerly or off the beautiful Matarangi beach on an easterly.

Cyclists can explore a range of local routes from a gentle cycle along the dirt track to Kuaotunu or more adventurous mountain biking.

If you prefer two feet to two wheels, then head to the far end of the beach to kick start your Matarangi Bluff Track adventure - check the DOC website for more info.

But of course, you don’t need to leave the lodge. If a good book, peace and quiet are the order of the day then find a nook or a cranny and settle in listening to the tuis sing their song.

And for a different kind of birdie, there’s The Dunes, an award winning golf course set on the stunning estuary a moments walk away. There’s also complimentary access to the floodlit tennis courts a short stroll from the lodge.

Local restaurants.

Kuaotunu’s sought out eatery, Lukes Kitchen, serves up authentic wood fired pizzas to die for with an impressive selection of craft beers and great wines. They regularly host live gigs. Check out their website for opening times and upcoming events. And with the adjacent Kia Kawhe cafe it’s also a great way to kick start the day with a flat white and a wander on Kuaotunu beach.

Closer to home and there’s The Dunes restaurant, a short walk away, serving up lunch and dinner overlooking the stunning golf course and the nearby Coromandel Ranges. In the village Pipers Café & catering is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as takeaways. Catering can also be arranged.

In the beautiful rural village of Coroglen is one of New Zealand’s most iconic pubs - The Coroglen Tavern. Known for the epic summer gigs and good pub grub it’s well worth keeping an eye out for upcoming gigs.

Travelling 30 minutes out of Matarangi is the seaside town of Whitianga serving up a wide selection of eateries.
